1. Mochlos In the coastal road from Agios Nikolaos, on the north-eastern coast of Crete, just 7km away from Sfaka (about 10 min.), is Mochlos, which apart from natural beauty has also great historical interest. Few meters away from the village and in the islet of St. Nicholas, the visitor can see clearly the remains of important Minoan settlement. The Minoan city flourished here during the mid-Minoan period and was one of the most important ports of eastern Crete. The main feature of Mochlos is the island with the same name which is just 150 meters from the coast, while the other small beaches around the village have also special characteristics.
2. Tholos (Kavousi) The beach Tholos (Kavoussi) is located just 17 km away from the village of Sfaka (about 20 min.) and is a quiet beach with pebbles and green water. It is formed at the outlet of a valley with huge groves which reaches up to the sand. Also on the beach there are several very large trees that offer shade to visitors.
3. Voulisma (Gold Coast) The Gold Coast or Voulisma as the locals call it is the largest municipal beach of Kalo Chorio, just 26 km (about 25 min.) from the village of Sfaka. This is a vast sandy beach, unique in Crete for its white sand which makes the waters clear and exotic.
4. Sitia beach Sitia with its lovely long beach is the last major town in eastern Crete, located 29 kilometers (about 30 min.) from Sfaka. Visitors can enjoy swimming and then can visit some of the many shops and taverns of the area.
5. Agia Fotia About 4 miles east of Sitia and 34km from Sfaka (about 35 min.) is Agia Fotia, a small coastal village with a clean beach and crystal clear waters, in the coastal road from Sitia to Vai-Toplou.
6. Ierapetra Approximately 33 km from Sfaka (about 30 min.) is the long beach of Ierapetra, with length 2.5 km! Ierapetra is the southernmost city in Europe and has countless options for swimming and excellent beaches.
7. Livadi (Ferma) Livadi Beach is located at Ferma, 10 kilometers east of Ierapetra and 32 km from Sfaka (about 40 minutes). Livadi is a small cove with pebbles and crystal clear waters. It is semi-organized beach with an amazing landscape of lush vegetation, tall rocks and steep cliffs.
8. Vai Perhaps the most famous beach in eastern Crete, Vai, is known worldwide because of the palm grove that surrounds it and is the largest in Europe! It is 53 km away from the village of Sfaka (about 50 min.) and has crystal clear waters and exotic landscape. 9. Itanos About 3 km north of Vai and 50 km away from Sfaka (about 50 min.) is the beach of Itanos, a small and quiet cove beneath the ruins of an ancient castle in classical times which also was a naval base. The great and indisputable advantage of this beach is its quiet and unique landscape.
